What changes when you convert HEIC to JPG

  • Both HEIC and JPG use lossy compression, so the image is re-encoded once more. At a quality of 80 or higher the extra loss is rarely visible, but avoid converting the same file back and forth repeatedly.
  • JPG has no transparency. Transparent areas in the HEIC file are flattened onto a solid background (usually white).
  • JPG is less space-efficient than HEIC, so expect the converted file to be larger than the original.
  • Compatibility improves: JPG opens in more browsers, apps and operating systems than HEIC.
  • HEIC is the default photo format on iPhones and iPads. Converting it avoids the "unsupported file" errors common on Windows, Android and many websites.

About HEIC

HEIC is Apple's name for HEIF images compressed with HEVC (H.265). It is the default photo format on iPhone and iPad, storing photos at roughly half the size of an equivalent JPG.

Best for
Photos taken on Apple devices and stored in iCloud Photos.
Strengths
Small files with high quality, 10-bit color, depth and Live Photo data.
Limitations
Poor support outside Apple devices: many Windows apps, Android devices and websites cannot open it.

About JPG

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used photo format. It uses lossy compression tuned for natural images, discarding detail the eye barely notices to keep files small.

Best for
Photographs, camera output, social media and email attachments where small size matters more than perfect detail.
Strengths
Small files for photos, universal support in every app and device.
Limitations
No transparency, visible artifacts around text and sharp edges, loses quality each time it is re-saved.

Frequently asked questions

Is the HEIC to JPG conversion really free?

Yes. ConverterUp is fully free, with no signup, no watermarks, and no daily quota for the HEIC to JPG converter. We support the project through unobtrusive ads.

Are my HEIC files uploaded to a server?

No. Conversion runs in your browser using WebAssembly. The HEIC bytes never leave your device, and we have no upload endpoint at all.

What is the maximum file size?

For HEIC input, the soft cap is 50 MB for images and 500 MB for video. Practical performance depends on your device's RAM.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly. Both formats are lossy, so a second encode adds a small amount of loss. With quality set to 80–90 the difference is almost never visible.

Does JPG keep the transparent background of my HEIC?

No. JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with a solid background. If you need transparency, convert to PNG or WebP instead.
